Cutie Pie the Series: A Review

SUMMARY: In the modern day of Thailand, two companies arrange a marriage between their only sons! Kuea Keerati lives a double life, one as the rich Keerati heir and the other as Kirin, a famous singer. When he's with the fiance he loves, Hia Lian, he only shows his good side-- until one day Hia Lian tells him he wants nothing to do with the engagement!?

It's not all the time we get a trope about an arranged marriage between two men (well, at least not in live-action dramas)! The premise itself is catching, because who doesn't love a classic conglomerate romance within the world of the rich? Cutie Pie the series is a romantic comedy with slice-of-life elements, great for when you want to watch heart-pumping drama!

(NOTE: No major spoilers)

CHARACTER RELATIONSHIP

In the beginning, there was a conflict between the characters that was necessary for the plot. Their differences made it difficult to ascertain whether or not they'd actually get along, especially considering they were always keeping secrets from each other. However, once their true personalities were revealed, it became clear that there was no problem.

Kuea, instead of the polite boy he pretended to be, is actually a rowdy musician who liked to tease and complain. Meanwhile, Hia, instead of the cool and cold personality he shows to others, transforms completely when he's with his lover. He turns doting and loving towards his younger partner, the perfect match for Kuea who is all over the place! Somoene older like Hia is just right to guide Kuea who can be a bit immature at times.

ACTING & CHEMISTRY

Zee really embodied the CEO vibes in this drama. From the little mannerisms and overall aesthetic as well (kudos to the stylists). As expected of an experienced actor. Meanwhile, Nunew is rather new. Despite being a new actor, he did better than I expected. Of course, it's not exactly astounding or amazing, but just great for a rookie actor.

Their chemistry together was actually off the charts! Something I didn't expect in the beginning. You can never tell with new pairs since they've never acted together before, but right off the bat in their first series together ZeeNew slammed us with scream-worthy chemistry! I look forward to their future series together.

PLOT & STORY-TELLING

Personally, I'm really fond of the CEO/conglomerate trope, and when they paired it with an arranged marriage trope I was ecstatic. I loved the beginning of the story, especially since with ZeeNew's chemistry it made all the scenes squeal-worthy.

I enjoyed it up until episode 6 and above. It was during that time when the relationship status between the two pairs ZeeNew and MaxNat started going in circles. It became tiring for a moment, but the entrance of the 3rd pair TutorYim was enough to keep my attention focused.

The plot plowed well during the first half but was a little bumpy nearing the end. MaxNat pair in my point of view didn't have the proper story flow I wanted. It was abrupt and random at times.

I must say that TutorYim is the pair I loved the most in the story in terms of story-telling. Their relationship developed quite well, and they were one of the reasons why I was still jumping in my seat as I watched the series.

For ZeeNew, their story flow did alright at the end. There is something really impactful about a series that portrayed same-sex marriage in a country that rejected the marriage equality bill.

Cutie Pie the series is a drama that combines our two favorite tropes: conglomerate and arranged marriage! This is a fresh and unique Thai series that separates from the rest in terms of chemistry and concept. If you want something that will have you covering your eyes from the spice, screaming from the romance, and basically enjoying the ride with a moderate amount of drama, then Cutie Pie series is the one for you!

In my personal opinion, I will give Cutie Pie an 8/10. A good watch that I enjoyed albeit a little dragging in the near-end. Everything else was awesome!
