Pavel Phoom on his new BL drama Coffee Melody

In an exclusive interview with Star Struck Media, Pavel Phoom talks about his latest BL drama, Coffee Melody! The heart-warming café romance starts with the character Duean Yi, a famous composer who needs inspiration for a love song and finds it in the handsome barista Plengrak.

This article post is brought to you in partnership with Cebu BL Organization!

Pavel on Coffee Melody’s Production

Coffee Melody is Pavel’s 1st series where he plays a character who is the story’s complete focus! With such an achievement, Pavel expressed that it was just another acting job for him, a job he had to do perfectly.

Covid had stalled his career for two years, so Coffee Melody was one of the many opportunities he strived for after the pandemic’s strict isolation. So now, he is doing his best to give Coffee Melody the best possible outcome.

Pavel thinks the series went pretty well in acting and production, especially since the drama gives a colorful expression and warmth, just like coffee. With the cozy-home mood, the vibe is genuinely different compared to his past drama, now with a mix of genres.

With the inherent romance and comedy, there are times when the episodes can get chilling, complete with plot twists in every corner!

Pavel, on his Character Plengrak

Compared to Pavel’s character in 2 Moons 2, who was a ruthless guy without care, Pavel had to tackle a whole new personality while taking on Plengrak’s character. Coffee Melody is a different series for Pavel since Plengrak’s nature, a heartwarming and charming character, completely rivaled his personal mannerisms.

How Pavel Prepared for Coffee Melody

While preparing for Coffee Melody, Pavel had to read through the whole story, get to know the background, and learn how to integrate every tiny detail into the soul of his acting. Things you don’t see directly but have to express from your inner. He said it was challenging to learn everything while making coffee simultaneously.

Pavel had to learn the basics of making coffee for the role, which included knowing the difference between coffee beans and different notes in flavors. He had to practice acting with coffee around a hundred times before he could do the actual recording since many takes included the special coffee techniques.

Coffee Melody’s café is a slow bar that requires exceptional drip coffee instead of the usual fast machine. Pavel expressed that he wasn’t used to such a slow life, and sometimes he’d get jittery wondering when the coffee would finish.

When asked if Pavel had tried any of his creations, he revealed he had. Still, many of the coffee you see in the series are props with coloring!

Pavel’s Experience Working on Coffee Melody’s Set

While Pavel was working on Coffee Melody, his main role as Plengrak didn’t give him much time for breaks. With such a packed filming schedule, he didn’t have time to have fun with other actors except for his co-star Benz, who played Duean Yi. Even then, they were constantly focused on practicing.

Every morning after having his routine rush with his favorite bike, Rosé, he would head to the set at 6 AM, and while getting his makeup done, he’d eat. He only had a little time to skim and prepare his mind for the shoot before jumping into the battlefield of acting for four hours until the next break.

They filmed shots in the café for long periods, and the extended exposure from the non-toxic ambiance of fog machines caused Pavel's throat.

When the pre-trailer was released, Pavel immediately went to read the comments. He saw that many viewers were excited to see him act as Plengrak!

At the end of the interview, Pavel left a message to all his fans, thanking them for watching and supporting him from the beginning. There’s still more to come, so stay tuned for Coffee Melody as it airs starting July 18th. With the improvements in the pandemic, expect to see Pavel more often!
